Marilyn McCorrister (nee Orton)

After university I moved to Toronto, Ontario to work for the TD Bank as a computer programmer and systems analyst, jobs I thoroughly enjoyed. After five years my first son was born in Oshawa, Ontario in July, 1977 and I moved to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba to spend the next nine years of my life as a stay at home mom to four very busy sons. The next three sons were born April 1979, September 1980 and March 1982.

A family decision to make a move had me back in the workforce doing bookkeeping and accounting, one year in Portage la Prairie and then four years in accounting offices in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Then I was on to Russell, Manitoba in the summer of 1991 where I worked in the Advanced Education Department for the Provincial Government for four and a half years. After a transfer to Winnipeg in May, 1996 I continued working for the Provincial Government in several capacities and retired from the Provincial Government in June, 2013.

I am very fortunate that my four sons all live close to or in Winnipeg. I am able to visit with my four grandsons born in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2012, two granddaughters born in 2007 and 2009 and one step granddaughter born in 1999.

In 2004 I started my travelling adventures and have travelled to all the continents except Antarctica. I have visited all ten provinces and over 40 countries. COVID19 has put a temporary stop to travel. Who knows what the future holds for travel. I am privileged to have a large group of friends who also like to travel. As an animal lover my favourite trip was to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana in February 2019 where we went on several safaris.

After retiring I volunteered at the Alzheimer’s Society for six years but COVID19 has put a halt to that. For the past fourteen years I have been treasurer of my local church, a job that has kept me out of mischief. I am currently handing over the reins to a new Treasurer. Prior to COVID19 I had season tickets to the opera, symphony and Prairie Theatre Exchange. Hopefully these will be able to resume this fall. I also belong to a book club, swim and exercise at the gym and golf and garden in the summer. Along with my travel, church work and socializing with my friends, these all have kept me quite busy.
